木鶏の境地
中国の故事に「木鶏（もっけい）」の話があります。昔、中国
で鶏を飼っている紀省子（きせいじ）という人がいました
●この人は王のための闘鶏を育て始めました。１０日くらい
経って「もう闘わせてもいいか」と王は聞きます。
●「まだです。空威張りして落ち着きがないから駄目です」と
答えます。
●また１０日ほどして「もういいか？」と再び聞きます。しかし
紀省子は、首を縦に振りません。「ほかの鶏の声や姿にいきり
立つから駄目です」。
●さらに１０日ほどしてやっと「ほかの鶏が鳴いても顔色ひとつ
変えなくなりました。まるで木で彫った鶏のようです。仕上がり
ました」と王に向かって紀省子は答えたのです。
●その「木鶏」を見たほかの鶏は皆静かになり、こそこそと逃げ
だしたのです。
●それ以来、周りの雑音に動じない様を「木鶏の心」と呼ぶよう
になったとのことです。
●私たちの日頃の生活の中では、さまざまな情報、人からの
批判、雑音が入ったりするものです。
●そんな時こそ、自分の軸をしっかり持って、物事に対処して
いきたいものです。
